John "Trey" Waller
John Waller is a professional basketball player based in Richmond, Virginia. He attended Highland Springs High School where he was a first team All-District, All-Metro and All-Central Region selection as a senior. He was also named second team All-State and Capital District Player of the Year and team MVP. He finished his high school career scoring 1,100 career points. He averaged 26.4 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game as a senior. One of his career highlights was when he scored 60 points in a single game against Lee Davis, which was a record for most points in a game at his school. Most honorably he was a Honor Roll Student all four years of high school. His father was an All-American basketball player at Virginia Union and played professionally overseas in the Netherlands. John then went on to recieve a four year basketball scholarship to Old Dominion University.
He graduated from Old Dominion University in 2004 where is recieved his bachelors degree in Sports Management. He also was a member of the Old Dominion University's basketball team from 2000-2004. He was coached by the well known Jeff Capel Sr. and his son Jeff Capel Jr. his freshman year. Jeff Capel is now apart of the Charlotte Bobcats coaching staff and his son Jeff Capel Jr. is now the head coach at Oklahoma University. In the 2001-02 season he was the teams fourth leading scorer, where he scored in double figures 12 times, including seven of the last nine games. He also scored a career high 20 points against UNLV and hauled in a career high ten rebounds against UNCW. He was second on team in three-point field goals made and started ten games in 29 appearances. In the 2002-03 season he was tied as the team's top returning scorer. He managed to score ten or more points ten times, scoring 16 points at James Madison University and at George Washington University then scoring 15 points vs William and Mary. He also hauled in a career high 11 rebounds vs. Drexel University and hitting game winning shot at the buzzer at Drexel. He started 20 of 26 games and was career 73 percent free throw shooter. In the 2003-04 season John Waller was named to the Third team All-CAA team and The Mark West "Best Defensive Player" recipient. He scored a career high 24 points against Liberty and scored 20 or more points five times. He was CAA Player of the Week on Dec. 22, 2003 hitting 8 of 10 field goals vs. George Mason University and grabbed ten rebounds against Liberty University.
This season John Waller started out in the African League of Angola, playing for Desportiva Inter-Clube. Unfortunately he had some problems with the professionalism of the team and left the team after the 2010 Christmas break. While there he helped the team get key wins against FC Vila Clotilde and Libolo. Currently John is playing in Portugal again for Ovarense Dolce Vita for his 4th season there. He is currently averaging 15 ppg. Since September 2004 he has played professionally in Iceland, Holland, Germany and Portugal where he has competed in top European competition. While competing in Europe John Waller has held the position of shooting guard and small forward in which he has been winner of the 2006 Holland Eredivisie League Dunk Contest, First Team All Regionalliga German League, and Winning the 2007-08 UZO Liga Portuguese National Championship. The 2007/08 season John Waller tried his hand in the U.S. An expert basketball panel of judges comprised of professional scouts and administrators from the D League offices selected 30 players from around the U.S known as the “Miller Lite 30-Pack.” John Waller was selected as one of the 30 players to compete for a D league contract. Instead John Waller opted for a contract in Europe. The 2008/09 season in Portugal he has was named an All-Star player by the LCB Portguese League Federation and helped his team (Ovarense Dolce Vita) to win the Portuguese Super Cup and National Cup being named Portugeuse Super Cup MVP. He finished last season averaging 18.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in Portugal. The 2009/10 season John signed back in Portugal playing for the third yr. (Ovarense Dolce Vita). He was named MVP of the 2009/10 All Star game for scoring 46 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He was also named to the 2009/10 All Eurobasket Portugal Honorable mention team. Had a fantastic personal season by leading the team and ranking 7th in the league in scoring at 18.1ppg. Was the leader of the team all season and paced them into the semi finals. Showed his all around excellent play but could not overcome a determined Porto squad. Bowed out in the 3rd game of the finals while registering 21pts, 6rebs and 2stls while going a red hot 4-9 3pt.
During the summer months, John Waller plays in the Greater Richmond Area Summer Pro League. The league is put on by former NBA player Johnny Newman and current NBA player Ben Wallace. The league features the Greater Richmond, Virginia Area talent from Europe, the NBA and the NCAA. The league has been host to several well known NBA players and college players such as Ben Wallace, Cory Alexander, Junior Burroghs, Harold Deane, and Michael Curry.
John Waller is currently in Porto, Portugal staying with his fiance’ Rute Correia. His home is in Richmond, Virginia with his mother Michelle Waller and his father John Waller Sr. He also has an older sister Chantel Waller who has three kids of her own, Trevon, Tiara and Everette Waller. When he is not playing basketball, John Waller is studying to get his Masters Degree in Computer Information Systems at Strayer University Online.
